This weekend our men’s first team went to Exeter University to play a side that hadn’t lost on the pitch so far this season.
Exeter started very quickly, with crisp passing, good off the ball movement and work rate to spare.
We struggled to cope with this in the early stages with Exeter getting first blood after an unfortunate deflection from Gary Charlie Chapman guiding the ball past a wrong footed Geoff Flowers.
Exeter continued their pressure and got a quick second when a ball in from the right was deftly deflected past Geoff.
After this we settled and though Exeter worked hard they didn’t pose any real threat to Geoff’s goal for the rest of the half.
On the stroke of halftime John A Rigby bit the hand that used to feed him and scored a fantastic goal against his old University and on the same pitch he scored so many on throughout his Uni career!
In the second half Exeter came on strong again, but this time we were ready and more than weathering the storm, we held our own.
James Vine hit the post after a short corner from Andy Hyder and Ewan Dodson and John Rigby also had chances late on.
Our midfield duo of 'Frankie' Fraser and Andy Hyder played excellently with Andy Hyder really unlucky to not get MoTM.
With the last act of the game Exeter scored with a controversial deflection from a short corner with the game finishing 3-1.
The score ultimately didn’t fairly reflect how close the game was, Exeter’s reaction at the end showed how they knew how much of a game they were in for the duration.
MoTM: John Rigby - his trademark work rate and link up play, and getting a deserved goal.
DoD: Gary Chapman - the unfortunate deflection to give Exeter their first goal!
